This is Runner Painting by Anthony Caruso done on Canvas with a mixed media. This portrait gives the true feeling of what it means to be a runner. The contrast in colors between the foreground and the background depict the sense of solitude felt by a runner. I relate to this feeling of freedom and isolation every time I go for a run.

Cardiff Kook. This statue is in my hometown, Cardiff-by-the-Sea. It has become somewhat of a celebrity throughout the past few years and has become my town's favorite thing to decorate in many humorous ways. My town is a small surfer town, in which almost everyone is a surfer. The reason why it is made fun of is because it is supposed to be the representation of the surfers in Cardiff. However, the sculptor who created this piece may not have done his research. This is actually nothing what a surfer looks like and only resembles the position a surfer might be in before he falls over. We call him the Kook because, well, that's exactly what he looks like. Almost every other week some neighbor will dress up this Kook in a hilarious way. Whether it is putting a floaties and innertubes on him or making him wear a tu-tu, our Cardiff Kook brings a smile to our face. For me, this sculpture is no long the representation of the surfer's in Cardiff, but a chance for my community to come together in a good laugh.

This is an oil painting of surfer girl. It's use of lines and colors give it the feeling of being in the water and watching a surfer pass. My whole life has been revolved around the ocean and surfing. I can especially relate to this piece not only because it is a representation of a girl surfer, but the colors are so true to the emotion you feel when you are in the water. It is a calming and moving piece that I find extremely true to my every day life.

This is a collage of a surf spot called Boneyard Reef in Northshore, Hawai'i. My favorite part of this piece is the amount of things to look at. It perfectly captures the feeling of the lifestyle of the surfing community, something I am always surrounded by. It offers a fun and lighthearted sense of the outdoors that is freeing and adventurous.

Beach at Swami's Encinitas. This painting is done of the coastline below my house. Swamis beach and Cardiff-by-the-Sea is where I grew up. Whenever I see this coastline I always feel a peaceful sense of being home. My favorite part of this painting is how the artist depicted the neutral colors of the coastline to further give it that feeling of serenity that I feel every time I drive down Highway 101

This is a photograph of the architecture at USD. I am using this photo because not only was this image one of my deciding factors for choosing USD, but it is something that will always remind me of what it feels like to be a student on such a gorgeous campus. The picture was taken on a typical clear day with the famous arched tree and the Immaculate in the background. It is a sight that I see almost everyday and it always makes me feel so lucky to be in such an amazing place.

  1. Nice selection of art work- good variety and descriptions! I'm a Cardiff local too and run by the Kook daily. I have some theories about why the Kook is so controversial to the surfing community
